Surnames of Jewish Emigrants from Ostropol
By Deborah Glassman, copyright 2013
The following list is extracted from the names of people who are currently in or about to be added to the tree I have created in Ancestry.com “Jewish Families of Ostropol and Staro-Konstantinen.” Almost all of the names have been collected from documents collected during the time of migration, or documents created in the destination country about the place of birth of an Ostropol immigrant.
The file itself is currently more than 7,000 names around 4500 of whom are Ostropolers, and the remainder are corollary families, or paths I got diverted down. At one time, I persisted down the lines of siblings-to-inlaws, carefully noting every in-laws brothers, sisters, and additional marriages. Now I do not include them unless there is a likely Ostropoler connection in those in-law families. I am still winnowing the tree from the digressions and diversions that had occurred.
But there are more than 662 individual surnames of people born in Ostropol, if you include all of the spelling variations that appear in US records.
Some of the variations are obvious. If the name ends in the syllable “man,” then look for it with both a final single n and a double n. Or better, look for it with a wildcard character. The Ostropoler surname, Friedman, I would search for as Fr*dm*n*.
In
most of the names below, the soft vowel sounds of I and E are interchangeable. The soft sounds of A and O are equally
swappable. Immigrants arriving in this country with a
name that in the
When I know of a name change – Milinivker to Miller, Feingold to Egeth, Dzuba to Brown – I try to share that. But you know more than I do. You know more of the changes and you may know more of the reasons. When a family shortened its name from Kotelansky to Kay, the reasons may be obvious. But why did Joseph Peretz Annex change his name from Joine Kantor, why did some members of the Podzhar family become Kauffman, and why did the Bialys have such a range of American names from Bello to Biel to Beallor.
Finally, there are more addenda coming to this list. I chopped off columns to get this list ready for primetime. But I want to have it note who was the first person known to have used the surname. I want a column that tells me if this is an orphaned line – that is if I have only info on the immigrant and can’t go back or down towards the present. I want a column that tells which family connects to the oldest branches. It is coming, but it all takes time.
This list is created for the Ostropol Kehillah page at the request of Dean Echenberg. I may post it on my tree to tie the two more closely, but it is really to reach out to my fellow researchers of Ostropol. Share your info, and help me get each of these lines far enough back that when we get into the Russian Revision lists, it will be an easy expansion of our research.
Glad to share this interest in the Jewish families of Ostropol with you.
